Policy and Guidelines
A--I don't print. If you request it, I will have prints made for you by a professional printer. I deliver the completed work on a CD-ROM or DVD. You can use your local printing resource and make as many prints as you like. If you require archival or fine prints of the finished work, I can recommend a reputable source. If you would like for me to handle the printing through a third party, I will add 25% of the cost of the printing for anything under $200 and 10% above that (not including shipping which you pay for) and will take care of all of the arrangements.
B--Technically the finished work is not a restoration, it is a digital re-creation. The original print is not altered or worked on in any way. The result is two digital files, one high resolution for printing (300 dots per inch) and one low resolution ready to send in an email, or put into a website, or to make a small print of (72dpi). In the case of a large original I can provide a higher resolution image (600dpi), especially if you plan to make a very large print.
C--Whenever there is an overly distracting feature on someone in a contemporary photo, I will automatically diminish it slightly so that the person is the focus of attention. This is done carefully because if it's a feature of a persons appearance that people are familiar with, to remove it entirely makes it become a distraction in and of itself. That said, I can make a person look perfect ( which I do not recommend ) or, if requested, I can make a person look "very" good without making them look "worked over".
D--I don't recommend altering appearance in a restoration. A restoration is more authentic and valuable if people's appearance's are not "improved" or altered......just cleaned up, and sharpened.
E--I no longer take Instamatic level photos that are underexposed and/or out of focus. My clients have never been happy with the best possible results, so I've stopped doing them. If it's a good photo and you only require repair, I will be glad to look at it and give you a recommendation.
F--IMPORTANT .........Depending on the damage to the photo, and the period in which it was created, I feel that it is not always appropriate to restore everything. Some of the value of the photo may be in the fact that it is an old picture. Very old, and very large photos don't look that good completely restored. Faces are always brought back as completely as possible. However, working out from the face toward the edges, less and less, so that the edges while cleaned up somewhat, still say "Old Photo". That is my approach unless you specifically request "full restoration" which is available, but less of an accurate representation of the reality of the photograph. Any damage is of course repaired

H--In any case, you will always receive a CD-ROM or DVD of your job, from which you can make all of the prints you like and from any printing source of your choice.
I--COLOR is a very subjective element of a photograph. When possible, I give clients an opportunity to review the color before the final image is delivered. I may think the color is perfect, but if you want it a little darker or a pinker flesh tone etc., I can make a last adjustment to bring it closer to your preference. If you submit a black and white photo to be colorized, or a faded color photo, I will provide you with details about how we accomplish the review.
